Meet Scotty - a 78-Year Old Inspiration

Writer: Kerri Burchill, PhDKerri Burchill, PhD

Hope your January is off to a great start!

I kicked off 2025 with a New Year’s Day 5K race!

When I was picking up my race kit, I met Scotty.

Scotty is 78, a three-time cancer survivor, and a military vet who has some leadership and life lessons worth sharing with you. I am going to share three life lessons we can learn from Scotty.

Here is the first lesson:

Lesson 1: Lean into fear instead of running from it

I crossed paths with Scotty because he walks around with dog bones.  A strange habit, right?

Why?

Because a long time ago, Scotty was attacked by a feral dog when he was running.  That naturally shook him.  He still wanted to run, but had to find a way to deal with the feral dogs he might cross.

The solution?

He started running with dog biscuits.  Scotty would throw dog biscuits out whenever he came across a dog on the street.  As you might guess – the dogs were more interested in the bones than Scotty.

Walking around with dog bones has created an opportunity for Scotty to meet other socialized dogs, and he no longer fears dogs.  So, it’s no surprise that Scotty walked up to me and Bug (our perfect dog) and offered her a bone.

Here's the irony . . .

What was once a fear is now a strength. Scotty is known in the running community as “Scottydog” (and you can check out his blog here (https://scottydogreports.com/)).

P.S. I am always looking to grow my business and support leaders.  If you know of a team or individual who could benefit from my training, keynote speaking or coaching, please share the word and set up a time with me to chat here.

Have a great week.
